What Is Liposuction?

Liposuction is a body contouring surgery to remove deposits of fat safely, effectively, and permanently. This procedure is ideal for people who have stubborn pockets of body fat that are unaffected by diet and exercise changes. It’s a versatile procedure that targets small pockets of stubborn fat to sculpt a trim, sleek, toned figure.

Liposuction is not intended as a weight loss procedure. However, liposuction does complement your healthy diet and exercise regimen to sculpt your figure.

What Areas of the Body Does Liposuction Address?

What is Lipo 360?

Lipo 360 contours and shapes the midsection in all 360 degrees to provide a smooth contour around the entire midsection for a sculpted look. This technique involves sculpting areas of the waistline for comprehensive contouring, including:

Dr. Bellamy recommends liposuction candidates should:

Preparing for Your Liposuction | Lipo 360 Procedure

In the week prior to your surgery, we advise you to maintain a healthy, high-protein, low-salt diet. Stop taking most herbal supplements, especially any including garlic, fish oil, or zinc. Medicines containing aspirin should be stopped, including Excedrin, ibuprofen, or Aleve, as these can cause additional bleeding or bruising. During your consultation, Dr. Bellamy will review all current medications and provide instructions on how to proceed with them; most prescriptions, especially blood pressure medications, should be continued.

Dr. Bellamy will also remind you that smoking, vaping, or any other type of nicotine products are strictly prohibited for at least four weeks prior to and following your procedure. Nicotine constricts blood vessels and affects the body’s ability to heal itself, potentially impacting your recovery and results.

West Palm Beach Liposuction | Lipo 360 Procedure and Recovery

All surgeries are performed in our own facilities, as our practice has two state-of-the-art, fully-certified AAAASF operating rooms. On the day of surgery, you will be greeted by our nursing staff, then review your procedural plan with Dr. Bellamy. He will answer any last questions you may have and make surgical markings.

Dr. Bellamy will begin your liposuction procedure by creating small incisions in the treatment area to remove extra and contour the area. Typically, an anesthetic solution is injected into the treatment site prior to your procedure to minimize pain and limit blood loss.

Liposuction procedures are a day surgery, so you’ll need to arrange for someone to drive you home and stay with you for the first day or so. You may also be prescribed pain medication to ease your discomfort.

After your liposuction procedure, you are required to wear a compression garment for at least four to six weeks. This helps minimize swelling and allows your body time to adjust to the new contours.

Most patients can resume light activities after the first week following liposuction surgery, and most patients are considered fully recovered within one to three months. Plan on taking a week off work for recovery. However, patients with physically strenuous jobs should plan on a longer recovery time or modified duties.

During recovery, you will need to avoid strenuous physical activities, such as exercising or heavy lifting, for six weeks after surgery. However, Dr. Bellamy recommends beginning slowly walking as soon as you are feeling well enough.

Surgical Mastery Meets Aesthetic Artistry

How Soon Will I See My Liposuction | Lipo 360 Results?

Following liposuction procedures, most patients notice immediate improvements to their overall figures. However, you will also experience swelling or bruising that can temporarily obscure your true results. As the body heals and swelling resolves, your new contours will become more visible. Typically, initial swelling resolves within four to six weeks, and your final results are visible between one and three months.

Following your liposuction procedure, you will enjoy long-lasting results by maintaining your stable weight by continuing your healthy diet and exercise regimen.

Dr. Bellamy creates a custom, personalized treatment plan for every patient. Cost may vary depending on the areas being treated and the extent of the desired treatment.

Liposuction works by using suction and specialized cannulas to remove unwanted fat from underneath the skin. This can be performed awake as a local procedure or under anesthesia. The cannula is inserted into the body via a small incision in the treatment area which allows access to the unwanted fat.

As with any surgery, it is important not to over exert yourself during the immediate recovery period, as this can cause prolonged swelling or other problems.

Following the procedure the patient can expect to wear a compression garment for 2 to 4 weeks to provide pressure to reduce swelling. Depending on the treatment area, drains may be placed to reduce swelling and prevent fluid accumulating in the treated area. Drain care such as emptying the drains and tracking the fluid amount should be expected until they are removed, typically around day 7-14.

While liposuction is not intended to cause “weight loss”, it does allow highly targeted fat removal in a manner not possible with traditional weight-loss.

During a stand alone liposuction procedure, as much as 4000cc can be removed total. In the state of Florida, if liposuction is performed in conjunction with another treatment requiring incisions (e.g. tummy tuck), the amount of fat that can be removed is limited to 1000cc as a safety precaution. Dr. Bellamy will discuss this with you during your surgical consultation.

Recovery time can vary per patient. During the first week, you can expect to be sore and slow moving. However, it is important to be walking after surgery to promote blood flow and prevent blood clots. By the second week, most patients return to normal day to day activity. Exercising involving cardio can continue after 3 weeks and lifting over 15 lbs after 4 weeks. In general, the majority of patients are totally recovered by 1 month.

Once fat has been removed, it is gone forever – results are permanent. Remaining fat can enlarge with weight gain, or shrink with exercise. For this reason, a healthy lifestyle after liposuction surgery is still important for optimal results.

Pain levels can vary per patient. Majority of patients experience moderate pain for the first 2-3 days, which is managed with prescription pain medication.

Normal sleeping position is acceptable following liposuction. It is recommended to prepare an area with pillows and towels for maximum comfort while recovering. If fat transfer is involved, optimal results require minimized pressure to the treated area. During your surgical consultation, Dr. Bellamy will discuss how your treatment goals will or will not affect sleeping position.

Liposuction is minimally invasive removal of unwanted fat through small access incisions (less than half-an-inch). A tummy tuck is a procedure in which excess skin of the abdomen is removed and the abdominal muscles are tightened. This is the only way to remove unwanted abdominal skin and tighten the abdomen. Liposuction addresses fat and excess volume, whereas a tummy tuck addresses loose skin.

General contouring can be seen instantly. While swelling will obscure your immediate results, as swelling subsides you will continue to see improvements.
